| Drill for loading and firing a 4pounder cannon. |
We attached ourselves to the 1er régiment d'artillerie, in order to learn the drill for serving a cannon.

Details of the drill. Our sergent Champagne and caporal Rôtisseur exercised the functions of the 1st and 2nd cannoneers (canoniers). |
||
The grenadiers Sans-Souci, Le Bonheur and La-Belle-Mer were ordered to observe and "annoy" a small detachment of a dozen Prussians, who had put up a small camp in the forest. We did our best.

Our company united with soldiers of the 18e, 37e and 85e de ligne and the 1er régiment d'artillerie. Together, we formed a combined peloton. The Prussians and Saxons outnumbered us heavily, but we surpassed them in speed, activity and ingenuity.
